Ali Baba - A treasure trove of Indian treats

Ali Baba was a poor woodcutter from The Arabian Nights who gained entrance to the treasure cave of the forty thieves by saying the magic words, “Open Sesame!”
Here in Pattaya entry into Ali Baba’s Indian restaurant is just as rewarding. It is the longest serving Indian curry house in Pattaya which speaks volumes for it’s consistency of food, reasonable prices and friendliness of the staff.

When an English friend visited recently and expressed a yearning for Indian nosh, where else could we take him but an old favourite of ours, The Ali Baba. Ascend the stairs lined with the swag of the fictional thieves and their unique decor awaits. Our friend is vegetarian and we were more than happy to join him in sampling the various vegetable options on the menu.

We ordered a selection of starters to share family style. We can recommend the tasty Vegetable Samosas (B.75), the Sabji Pakoras (assorted vegetables deep fried in a special batter) and the excellent Paneer Cutlets which are Indian-style cottage cheese patties with coriander as tasty openers for your veggie extravaganza. For our main courses we chose Sambar Masala (yellow lentils cooked southern style), dum Aloo Mohjulai (whole braised potatoes in Mogul sauce B.120), Bhindi Masala (okra in masala gravy) and Gobi Jalfrezi (cauliflower blended with tomato puree and vinegar B.120).

The Vegetable Biryani rice worked perfectly with these dishes and we enjoyed it all immensely. Should you not feel like making decisions the Vegetarian Thali (literary means tray) would be a good choice.

For B.450 you are served a generous selection of their vegetable menu together with tasty breads, rice, poppadoms and a desert.

The Ali Baba is an institution here in Pattaya and has been serving the local Indian community, ex-pats and tourists alike for the past sixteen years.
